German automotive giant Audi has reportedly announced plans to invest a staggering €1 billion, approximately $1.08 billion, in electric vehicle projects in the Mexico’s Puebla. According to a Reuters report, citing statement from state officials, this capital infusion is expected to create 500 additional jobs in the city.

“The confidence of investors in Mexico is strengthened, since there is certainty that our country is growing economically,” Governor Sergio Salomon wrote in a post on social media platform X account on Tuesday. “This historic investment by #AudiMexico not only consolidates the leadership of #Puebla as an “electromobility hub” worldwide, it also means greater employment opportunities for many Puebla families,” he said in another post.

The automaker’s existing plant in the picturesque town of San Jose Chiapa, Puebla, is poised to undergo a significant transformation. Infrastructure and equipment are being readied for the production of the company’s renowned “e-tron” vehicles, most likely the next generation of the Audi Q8 e-tron SUV. This expansion builds upon the success of the company’s operations in Mexico, where it builds the Q5 mid-size SUV and currently employs over 5,000 individuals.

While an official production timeline hasn’t been announced, Audi’s Board of Management Member for Production mentioned a 2027 start date for the Q8 e-tron successor in Mexico. The move holds immense potential, especially in the lucrative US market, where the automaker’s electric offerings could benefit from government incentives aimed at promoting domestic EV production.

The luxury electric SUV Audi Q8 e-tron combines performance, comfort, and style. It starts at $74,400 in the United States for the base “Premium” trim level and goes up to $89,395 for a top-of-the-line “Prestige” trim with options.
