As Samsung unveiled its latest foldable phones, OnePlus has strategically entered the foldable phone arena with a tantalizing teaser for its first-ever folding device. The company hinted that the much-anticipated phone will be named “OnePlus Open,” a unique departure from the expected naming conventions in the industry. Previously, it was speculated to be called the OnePlus V Fold.
While not an official confirmation, the teaser tweet strongly suggests that the OnePlus Open will adopt a “book-style” folding mechanism, akin to its rivals, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Pixel Fold, as opposed to the flip phones present in the market.
Leaked renders further support the notion, showcasing a sleek device featuring a prominent camera hump reminiscent of the OnePlus 11 series. Excitingly, the OnePlus Open is expected to feature a Hasselblad partnership for its cameras, boasting a powerful setup with a 48MP primary camera, a 48MP ultra-wide lens, and a 64MP telephoto lens. For selfies, it is rumored to have a 20MP outer display shooter and a 32MP inner display camera.
Under the hood, the OnePlus Open is speculated to be powered by the formidable Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset with a whopping 16GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. Fueling the device will be a substantial 4,800mAh battery with 100W fast charging, ensuring efficient power replenishment.
Though OnePlus has not divulged the specifics of the launch, it has confirmed that the OnePlus Open will make its debut in the second half of 2023, with a likely Q3 launch date. Some leaks even point to a possible August 29 launch event. The phone is expected to be available globally, including in the US and India, with possible variations in its availability in some European markets due to ongoing legal disputes between OnePlus and Nokia.
Despite being OnePlus’ first foray into the foldable segment, expectations are high for the OnePlus Open. The company’s close ties with OPPO, which already boasts three foldable phones, position OnePlus well to deliver an exceptional foldable device.
As for the price, while no official figures have been released, industry experts predict the OnePlus Open will likely cost around $1,000 or more, making it a premium flagship contender. With the impending launch, OnePlus fans are eagerly awaiting more concrete details, which are expected to surface soon. Until then, excitement continues to mount as the OnePlus Open seeks to carve its place in the competitive foldable phone landscape.
