Reliance Jio has quietly entered the budget laptop market in India with its ‘JioBook’ launched on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal. Right now, only government departments can shop via the portal, however, speculations have it that general availability might happen during this Diwali along with the launch of Jio 5G. On the GeM portal, the laptop is priced at ₹19,500.
JioBook features and specifications
At the ongoing India Mobile Congress (IMC), 2022, JioBook is already on display. Talking about the specifications, the laptop is listed as Jio Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 11.6 Inch Netbook on the government portal. JioBook is ‘Made in India’; this is what the company is claiming and touting as the reason behind its price.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 octa-core processor with Adreno 610 GPU for graphics powers the laptop. The body is made of plastic and showcases a ‘Jio’ logo on the lid. It features a standard form factor with chassis made of ABS plastic that comes with metallic hinges. It has an 11.6-inch HD display with a 1366×768 pixels resolution.
The device will run on a custom version of the operating system, the Jio OS. The laptop is equipped with just 2GB RAM and also has an HD camera as well for video recording. The device will be pre-installed with some apps such as a Microsoft Ad browser and supports Jio Cloud PC.
As per the reports, JioBook will be manufactured by the company’s Indian contract manufacturer Flex. The Mukesh Ambani-led business hopes to sell “hundreds of thousands” of JioBooks by March 2023.
