American multinational tech giant Google has recently introduced its digital wallet service, Google Wallet, to the Indian market, providing users with a seamless way to manage various aspects of their daily lives. This move comes nearly two years after the app’s relaunch in the United States. This digital wallet stores your boarding passes, loyalty cards, movie tickets, and more, all in one place.

Not a Replacement for Google Pay

The launch of Google Wallet in India comes alongside the continued presence of Google Pay, which remains the company’s primary payment application in the country. While Google Wallet might sound similar to Google Pay, the popular payments app in India, they serve different purposes. Google Pay will continue to be your go-to app for making digital payments using UPI or RuPay credit cards. Google Wallet focuses on non-payment functionalities.

What can you store in Google Wallet?

    • Flight boarding passes
    • Movie and event tickets
    • Bus and metro tickets
    • Brand loyalty cards
    • Gift cards
    • Corporate badges (select brands)

One of the key features of Google Wallet is its seamless integration with various brands and services. Users can easily add items to their wallet using QR codes, barcodes, or links shared through Gmail. The app supports a wide range of functionalities, including storing transit tickets and creating passes from images containing barcodes or QR codes. Initially, Google Wallet will collaborate with 20 prominent brands in India, with plans to onboard more partners in the future. The company further promises the usage of advanced security features to keep your information safe.

How to Use Google Wallet in India:

    1. Download the Google Wallet app from the Play Store (Android version 7.0 and above).
    2. Sign in with your Google account (if not already logged in).
    3. Tap “Add to Wallet” and choose the type of item you want to add (photo, loyalty card, gift card, etc.).
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your chosen item.

The Future of Google Wallet in India

Google plans to expand its partnerships with more brands and services, offering even greater convenience for users. While the current version does not support storing credit or debit cards, future updates might include this functionality.
