Toyota has unveiled its fifth-generation Prius globally. With a complete makeover, the hybrid sedan now has a fresher and sportier look. Two models will be available: Series Parallel Hybrid (HEV), which will launch in winter this year in Japan, and Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) models, launching in spring 2023. The vehicle is equipped with Toyota’s fifth-gen hybrid system along with the second-gen TNGA platform.
Prius, first launched in 1997, had its fair share of popularity with several celebrities owning it- Leonardo de Caprio being one of them. However, over the last two decades, the “eco-friendly” vehicle has lost its charm as electric vehicles became more accessible and mainstream. Toyota is trying to make the overhauled Prius more appealing by referring to it as a ‘Hybrid Reborn.’
Toyota says Prius has been reborn, inheriting the signature “monoform silhouette” design introduced in the second-generation Prius (2003-2009). The new version has a low center of gravity and large-diameter 19-inch wheels on the second-generation TNGA platform. It has a panoramic view moonroof which can be fully opened. At the back, a full-width LED light with a fastback roofline with a large gloss black applique can be seen.
The vehicle comes with a 2.0-liter Plug-in Hybrid System with a high-efficiency Dynamic Force Engine and lithium-ion batteries for the high-output drive to achieve a maximum system output of as much as 164 kW (223 PS). The acceleration of a PHEV can achieve 0-100 km/h in 6.7 seconds. Toyota says the new Prius comes with an improved battery, delivering 50 per cent higher EV driving range than its previous model. The battery can be charged through the solar charging panel, which, as per the company, can charge the car while parked and generates power equivalent to up to 1250 kms per year. The solar panel-generated power will aid driving and even functions like AC. The theE-Four system offers improved uphill performance on low-friction road surfaces, like snow-covered roads, and greater stability when turning.
Prius also comes with some exciting add-on features. It is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense monocular camera at the front, a rear-facing camera for the Digital Inner Mirror, and an in-vehicle drive recorder. Inside, it features a large central touchscreen infotainment system and a digital driver’s display. The Toyota Teammate system has an Advanced Park with a remote function, that allows the vehicle to be controlled remotely when pulling into and out of a parking space. Other than this, it is also equipped with two 100 VAC / 1,500 W accessory power outlets; one at the back of the center console and one in the cargo space.
