Tata Motors has unveiled its new dedicated electric vehicle architecture called ‘acti.ev’ that will underpin its future range of electric vehicles. The first model to debut this new platform is the Punch EV, Tata’s latest electric offering in the rapidly growing EV segment in India.
The acti.ev architecture focuses on four key pillars – performance, technology, modularity and space efficiency. It consists of four layers – powertrain, chassis, electrical architecture and cloud architecture. This modular and flexible platform can accommodate multiple body styles and battery capacities, enabling Tata to build a wide range of EVs for different customers.
On the powertrain front, the improved battery pack design offers higher energy density and supports multiple range options from 300km to 600km. The architecture enables front, rear or all-wheel drive configurations and can charge at up to 150kW using DC fast charging, adding 100km of range in just 10 minutes.
The chassis has been engineered for safety and maximizes cabin space by eliminating the transmission tunnel. The flat floor and frunk offer practical storage options without compromising interior room. Handling is enhanced via the low center of gravity.
The electrical architecture readies Tata EVs for the future with Level 2 ADAS capabilities, 5G connectivity, over-the-air updates and V2L and V2V charging. The user experience will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon digital cockpit platform.
Finally, the cloud architecture layer enables new connected services like Arcade and other solutions for superior connectivity.
The Punch EV is the first model to showcase these new acti.ev capabilities. Visually, it carries forward the design language of the standard Punch while adding some EV-specific touches like a closed grille with LED DRLs, restyled bumpers and blue accents.
Inside, the Punch EV gains a thoroughly modern and upmarket cabin with twin 10.25-inch displays for instrumentation and infotainment. Premium features like ventilated front seats, wireless charging and a sunroof make their debut on this entry-level EV crossover.
Safety has been enhanced as well with 6 airbags and electronic stability control fitted as standard. The Punch EV will be offered in two range options – standard and long range. Prices are expected to start around Rs. 13 lakh to slot it between the Tigor and Nexon EVs.
With the new acti.ev architecture, Tata Motors has laid the foundation to build a diverse EV portfolio spanning multiple segments and body styles. The modular nature of the platform gives Tata the flexibility to add new models with different battery sizes, ranges, performance levels and drive configurations relatively quickly and cost-effectively.
The focus on future-proof technology makes Tata EVs ready for connectivity and autonomous driving trends. Over-the-air updates will keep the vehicles fresh and add new capabilities over their lifespan. Bidirectional charging opens up innovative use cases for EV owners to power appliances or charge other EVs using their car’s battery.
