WhatsApp received a total of 946 complaints in November from users.

WhatsApp has banned 37.16 accounts last month in the country, according to its India Monthly Report for November published under the Information Technology Rules 2021. This is 60 percent more than the accounts it banned in October.

“Between 1 Nov, 2022 and 30 Nov, 2022, 3,716,000 WhatsApp accounts were banned. 990,000 of these accounts were proactively banned, before any reports from users. An Indian account is identified via a +91 phone number,” the instant messaging app said.

The company received a total of 946 complaints in November from users, out of which 830 complaints pertained to ban accounts. WhatsApp, however, acted only against 73 accounts.

In October, the Meta-owned application banned 23.24 lakh accounts in the country. This includes 8.11 lakh accounts that were barred proactively. It received a total of 701 complaints in that month, out of which it took action on 34 accounts.

“The abuse detection operates at three stages of an account’s lifestyle: at registration, during messaging, and in response to negative feedback, which we receive in the form of user reports and blocks. A team of analysts augments these systems to evaluate edge cases and help improve our effectiveness over time,” the company said.

For the reports on which WhatsApp did not act, the company stated some reasons like the user requesting to restore a banned account and the request is denied.
