Several Twitter users across many nations, including India, have complained that they are unable to refresh their feeds or even log in to their accounts. The outage comes amid the uncertainty over job cuts, expected to be carried out today under the new owner Elon Musk.
Users are unable to access the microblogging site on their desktops, while the phone version continues to work. According to DownDetector, an outage reporting site, 91% of the complaints were related to Twitter’s website, while only 6% of the reports were related to the app.
Twitter has not given any official comment yet. However, according to a report by The Indian Express, the social media platform is now back online for several affected users.
The outage comes after the company informed about mass layoffs earlier today. “In an effort to place Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,” the company said in an email to the staff earlier today, as reported by Reuters. “If you are in an office or on your way to an office, please return home.”
The mail further stated that the company’s offices will remain temporarily shut, and all badge access will be suspended. Further, the employees who are retained will be notified via their work email, while the laid-off employees will be notified about the next steps via their personal email id. Twitter’s new owner has already cleared out the senior ranks that include the now-former chief executive officer Parag Agrawal.
These layoffs are a part of Musk’s $1 billion annual infrastructure cost savings measures.
