Instagram’s own account lost about a million followers during the issue.
Several Instagram users faced suspended accounts amid a global outage, which the company is now said to have fixed. The reason for the outage, which happened on Monday, still remains unknown.
The bug even led to a temporary change in the number of followers for some users, the company Tweeted. The head of the social media company Adam Mosseri apologized for the outage.
Users went on other social media platforms like Twitter to complain about how their Instagram page displayed a message for a suspended account when they tried to log in. The reason behind the suspension of accounts was displayed as non-adherence to the community guidelines. Moreover, users were given 30 days to disagree with the decision and go through a review.
According to The Verge, the issue was likely concentrated among iPhone users, with some saying their app crashed and became unusable ahead of an update earlier that morning. Just after Instagram confirmed the issue, reports on Downdetector exceeded 7,000 but were leveled off during the day.
From celebrities to content creators, several complained about a dip in the number of followers. Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo temporarily lost three million followers, while Instagram’s own account lost about a million followers during the issue. This was also later fixed.
Just last week, another Meta-owned application WhatsApp faced its longest-ever global outage that resulted in a downtime of about two hours for users. During the outage, users could not send and receive messages. The Indian government has asked the company to submit a detailed report about the outage, details of which are not yet public.
