An engineer, who found solace in designing and racing ATVs and go-karts, Afzal made the natural move to automotive journalism. His enthusiasm for tech saw him take up reviewing consumer gadgets and soon enough he became the founding editor of Unboxed Magazine. Afzal loves slow travel (something the fast-paced nature of his job tries hard to steer him away from) and is often seen trying to eke out some time for a leisurely stroll through some of the amazing places he visits. He likes to believe that even though he is a tech and automotive connoisseur, he can step back enough from the products he reviews to provide much-needed context. He has shied away from being on camera for most of his career, but is now slowly but certainly spending more time in front of one, nudged by his extremely photogenic cat, Bailey.

BYD has launched the Seal electric sedan in India, priced at Rs 41 lakh for the entry-level Dynamic variant and going upto Rs 53 lakh for the top-spec Performance AWD variant (both prices ex-showroom). This marks the Seal as BYD’s third offering in the country, following the e6 MPV and Atto 3 SUV, and it will be come into India as a CBU.

The company has opened bookings for the Seal, requiring a deposit of Rs 1.25 lakh. Early birds booking before March 31, 2024, will enjoy extra benefits, including complimentary home charger installation, a portable 3kW charging box, and 6 years of roadside assistance, among others.

The Seal comes with options for two battery sizes (61.4kWh and 82.5kWh), and is available in RWD and AWD configurations. The smaller battery is only available with RWD, while the larger battery is available with both RWD and AWD.

Both the batteries feature BYD’s Blade technology. The smaller battery powers a single rear-axle motor delivering 204hp and 310Nm of torque, with a range of 510km. The larger battery version produces 312hp and 360Nm in single-motor RWD configuration, and 530hp and 670Nm in dual-motor AWD configuration, boasting ranges of 650km and 580km, respectively. The AWD variant accelerates from 0-100kph in 3.8 seconds, which easily makes it the luxury EV (and quickest car overall) under Rs. 1 crore. The BYD Seal supports up to 150kW charging.

The Seal showcases a design inspired by the Ocean X concept and adopts BYD’s “ocean aesthetics” design philosophy. It features a coupe-like glass roof, flush door handles, distinctive LED lighting, and attractive 19-inch alloy wheels. It is available in four colors: Arctic Blue, Aurora White, Atlantis Grey, and Cosmos Black.

Inside, the Seal is equipped with a rotating 15.6-inch central infotainment screen, a 10.25-inch digital dashboard, a heads-up display, and other luxurious appointments. It offers an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, climate-controlled front seats, wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay, and a suite of safety features, including a 5-star Euro NCAP rating.

Competing against electric vehicles like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and Volvo XC40 Recharge, the Seal stands out as a unique electric sedan in its price range. More importantly, it is easily the most performance-oriented in the segment and offers a whole lot of features.
